Things to do around Otium Estate
We are lucky to be situated in such a beautiful part of England - within the South Downs National Park - not to mention surrounded by some first class English history and culture. Alresford - a handsome Georgian town - looks like a set from a period drama - which is not surprising as we are incredibly close to Jane Austen’s ‘Chawton House’. The town itself has a lovely selection of independent shops, old-fashioned pubs, bistros and tea rooms.
Chawton House itself is open to visitors - and in the grounds is the bailiff’s residence (now The Jane Austen’s House Museum), where Jane, her mother and sister lived, and Jane enjoyed the most prolific period of her writing life. Fans of Jane’s work cannot fail to be enchanted.
Otium is also within walking distance of the village of Selborne - the village made famous by Gilbert White, one of the country’s most celebrated natural historians. ‘The Natural History of Selborne’ celebrates and reveals the nature of Gilbert’s world - and has never been out of print since its first edition in 1789. Visitors to Otium can therefore expect plenty of beautiful walks around this quintessentially English countryside, with good local pubs aplenty for refreshments!
