Ex Labore Otium
After work, rest

A hidden gem, just up the hill from the quaint village of Selborne, our 80-acre estate blends picturesque woodlands, wetlands, and lush farmland. Enriched by ancient sandstone soils, our vineyards are the ideal home for growing exceptional fruit for creating premium sparkling wines.

Our journey began in 2020, when we traded the fast pace of London for a slower, more meaningful way of life—one rooted in nature, family, and legacy. With a vision to build something enduring for future generations, we made our home on a long-forgotten farm in the heart of the South Downs.

In choosing the name Otium, we looked to an ancient idea. In Latin, otium meant more than leisure—it described a state of considered stillness, where life slows down just enough to let the most important things rise to the surface: reflection, creativity, connection. That philosophy now shapes everything we do.

Since settling here, we’ve brought the land gently back to life. Timeworn farm buildings have been reimagined into welcoming cottages and shepherd’s huts—peaceful hideaways where guests can step away from the everyday and into something quieter, richer, more intentional. Whether you're wandering through the vines, enjoying a picnic, or simply relaxing with a good book and a glass of wine, you’ll find a moment to pause and reconnect with what truly matters.

In 2021, we planted seven blocks of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier vines—the foundation for traditional method sparkling wine. It’s a patient craft: our first release will take six to seven years from vine to glass. We believe that great things take time, and we can’t wait to share our debut wines with you in 2026.

Whether you’re seeking a romantic retreat, a restorative escape, or a sense of rhythm in nature, we’d love to welcome you. Come and experience Otium—a place to slow down, breathe deeply, and feel completely at home.
